Below are some questions that were commonly missed along with some analysis explaining what the answer should be.
37. Which of the following describes "the Lowell system" in early nineteenth-century New England?
(A) A plan to promote and expand textile manufacturing activities
(B) An agreement among the New England states to secede and form a New England confederacy
(C) A reform eliminating property-holding as a qualification for voting
(D) A strategy to defend New England during the War of 1812
(E) A congressional reapportionment plan during the 1820's.
Analysis: The Lowell system was a labor and production model employed in the United States, particularly in New England, during the early years of the American textile industry in the early 19th Century. Before industrialization, textile production was usually done at home. However, following the inventions of the spinning jenny, spinning mule, and water frame, industrialized production could be done under one roof, usually in a factory setting.

49. The Palmer Raids of 1919 were conducted against
(A) suspected communists and anarchists
(B) Republicans bitterly opposed to the Wilson administration
(C) alleged financial backers of Marcus Garvey
(D) labor organizers for the American Federation of Labor
(E) White racist organizations such as the Ku Klux Klan.
Analysis: Taking place during the red scare, the Palmer Raids were attempts by the United States Department of Justice to arrest and deport radical leftists, especially anarchists, from the United States. Ultimately, more than 500 foreign citizens were deported, including a number of prominent leftist leaders.

59. Which of the following best characterizes the muckrakers of the early twentieth century?
(A) They were primarily concerned with racial issues.
(B) They were mostly recent immigrants to the United States.
(C) They were leading critics of urban boss politics.
(D) Their influence on public opinion was greatest after the First World War.
(E) They wrote primarily for an academic audience.
Analysis: The term muckraker refers to reform-minded journalists who often worked to expose social ills and corporate and political corruption. Muckraking magazines took on corporate monopolies and crooked political machines while raising public awareness of chronic urban poverty, unsafe working conditions, and social issues like child labor.
Answer: C

75. Which of the following resulted from the policies of the Andrew Jackson administration?
(A) A central bank was established.
(B) The value of paper currency issued by individual banks became uniform.
(C) The number of banks, each issuing its own paper currency, increased.
(D) A nationwide banking system was begun.
(E) Federal fiscal activities became linked to a system of federal banks.
Analysis: President Andrew Jackson was completely against a central bank and even vetoed the rechartering of one. In fact, in 1833, Jackson retaliated against the federal bank by removing federal government deposits and placing them in "pet" state banks. Ultimately, this led to an increase in "wildcat banks". With this knowledge, options A, D, and E can be eliminated. Considering, that the national bank didn't get rechartered, it seems unlikely that individual banks would conform to certain standards, which eliminates option B.
Answer: C
Hope this helps. Remember, if you learn from your mistakes, you are less likely to repeat them. This is only a portion of the test, I would recommend you go in one day and review the entire test.

Nice to know I know these answers, but were they from Mr. Stewart's previous test. If not, then what's the source?
ReplyDeleteI believe they were from Mr. Stewart's previous test.
ReplyDeleteAnother one that Mr. Stewart talked about in class was:
In 1840 the American Antislavery Society split into factions because:
(A) its goals had been accomplished
(B) most Americans rejected the goal of colonizing Black people
(C) William Lloyd Garrison's advocacy of women's rights and pacifism alienated some members
(D) a new sentiment in Congress favoring abolitionism led to disagreement over the rights of former slaves
(E) the death of Elijah P. Lovejoy created a struggle for power within the organization
Analysis: This is the type of question that may have some answer choices that confuse readers. Option A and B are clearly out because in 1840, the issue of slavery was far from being resolved (the Civil War hadn't even happened yet!) Though Elijah P. Lovejoy was an abolitionist, he died in 1837, eliminating E. Even if you didn't know that (which many people probably didn't), you can typically weed out answers such as these simple on account of how tangential they sound. These, along with the knowledge that William Lloyd Garrison was a women's rights activist, help you reach the answer.
The main take away from these kinds of questions is not to underestimate the power of POE when it comes to questions that upon reading may make you panic. Many answer choices can usually be eliminated with careful reasoning. Even if you don't know the answer, you can usually get to the right choice by weeding out other answers; just takes a little thinking and a clear mind.
Answer: C
