Review: Development of the Colonies

Here is the continuation of the review of the Colonial Era that I promised.  Hopefully this helps spark some remembrance if you haven't seen this since the beginning of the year.

  • Southern Colonies-->economy dominated by slavey
  • New England Colonies-->economic transformations that defied pious ideals of original puritan communities
  • Middle Colonies-->developed in economic and ethnic diversity as they were filled by many immigrants from Europe
  • Bacon's Rebellion-->group of frontier farmers who marched into Jamestown and burnt homes of elite planters
    • former indentured servants (who were part of rebellion) needed land for farms
    • caused by governor of Virginia's unwillingness to help fight indians who were keeping the land from them
    • farmers were also upset at lack of representation in the House of Burgesses.
  • King Philip's War-->Indian attack on New Englanders who had been steadily pushing west and taking indian land
    • New England people called Wampanoag chief King Philip
    • New Englanders counter attacked so that thousands of New Englanders and indians were killed.
  • Salem Witch Trials took place in 1692
  • Deists believed that God exists but as a distant entity.
    • they tried to uncover and understand the natural laws that control life
  • Proclamation of 1763:  set a boundary along the crest of the Appalachian mountains beyond which the English colonists were forbidden to settle.
Hopefully this helps!  Please comment with other facts or pieces of knowledge that you think are very important to this era.

  1. Another thing to add about the Salem Witch trials:
One of the AP review questions I did asked about how the witch trials reflected growing tensions, so I thought it might be helpful to know that many of those who were accused were part of the merchant elite, so it reflected a growing tension between social classes, not just religious tensions.

  2. I guess my biggest question was why was the government of England a constitutional monarchy but these colonial holdings theocratic civilizations? Were they trying to escape the ideals of pseudo democracy as exemplified through a constitutional monarchy and from a religion run state? If so did this fail because evidently it doesn't exist today in America and the countries it does exist in (Iran, Libya, Afghanistan) are not doing to well
